Lent 2022

February 23: Our Lenten Guide Begins

This year, we invite you to explore the themes and wisdom of Lent more deeply with our digital Lenten guide. This guide will contain meditations and resources meant to help you to engage in personal spiritual practice and reflection. A link to a pdf of the guide will be available in the weekly, beginning on February 23. Printed copies will also be available at the church following worship each week of Lent.

March 2: Ash Wednesday

DRIVE-BY ASHES are from 6:30-7:30am and then again from 12:00-1:00pm. Participants can drive around the back of the church to the exit driveway. There a minister will meet you with ashes and a blessing through your car window.

ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE  Join us virtually or in-person on Wednesday, March 2 at 7:00pm for an intimate service led by Barbara, David, and Genna in the Chapel. The service includes readings, a brief reflection, and an opportunity to receive ashes and a blessing.

PLANT A PAPERWHITE  Throughout Lent we ponder our own fragile beauty and mortality. Adding a new dimension to this, you are invited to spend a portion of Lent nurturing and encouraging the fragile beautiful growth of a flower. Paperwhite Narcissus is a white flower easily grown in soil or water. Planted in the first week of Lent, watch it grow and finally blossom right around Easter. Bulbs, plastic pots, soil, and care and prayer materials will be available for pick up at the church on Ash Wednesday.

Note: like Christmas Poinsettias and Easter Lilies, Paperwhites can be harmful to pets if eaten

March 6

SUNDAY EVENING WORSHIP BEGINS  During Lent, we invite you to join us once again for Evening Worship at Hancock! Evening worship services run from March 6-April 10, on Sundays at 4:00pm in Clark Hall. Evening worship is a smaller, more casual worshiping experience, featuring members of our River Rock Band. So join us as we gather and encounter the Divine together! (Read more about Evening Worship HERE.)

March 7

MONDAY SMALL GROUP BEGINS  On Monday nights from 7:00 – 7:30pm throughout Lent join your ministers for a 30 minute contemplative prayer service. We meet over Zoom to share a reading, light candles, and lead a time of silent and spoken prayer.

April 10: Palm Sunday and Outdoor Reception

2022’s Palm Sunday combines beloved traditions with new delights. We process with palms for waving in the sanctuary and via video, as we have for the last two years. Palms for the video are available at the church on March 27th. Join us for a bagged lunch provided by Parish Life after worship. Hosanna!

April 15 & 16

STATIONS OF THE CROSS  This year, we once again feature Stations of the Cross around the outside of Hancock Church, using the work of Mary Button. This year’s collection titled “Stations of the Cross and Resurrection” is another set in her series, and serves as a sequel to last year’s set.
