Senior Minister

Rev. Paul Shupe

This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Paul became Senior Minister at Hancock United Church of Christ in August, 2009, having previously served congregations in Madison, Wisconsin and Falmouth, Maine. He brings more than twenty years of experience with him, and he loves both churches and church people. Preaching, teaching and fellowship are among his passions, as well as continuing to learn and grow. Paul believes that the United Church of Christ has a unique mission to the world today, grounded in our simultaneous commitments to the freedom and responsibility of the individual and the congregation to determine their own paths of faith and discipleship, as well our dedication to remaining in covenant relationship with others, even those with whom we might disagree. He believes churches should be robust and vibrant communities of exploration, support, compassion and inclusion, working for a more just and peaceful world, and he is looking forward to helping Hancock become evermore faithful to such a vision, building on the solid foundations already in place.

Paul walks through life with his beloved wife of nearly 30 years, MaryAnn. Together they have two sons, Nathan 24, and Sam 21, who reside in Portland, Maine. Paul loves to read (novels, history, biography), to ride his bicycle, to walk and hike. He has a modest record collection (vinyl, remember them?) with an eclectic range of styles. He is a passionate fan of the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins (in that order). He enjoys nothing as much as a good conversation. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at Graceland University, his Master of Divinity at Vanderbilt Divinity School and his Doctor of Ministry at Columbia Theological Seminary.

Administrative Director, Hancock Bells Ministry

Cheryl Kraley

This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Cheryl joined Hancock Church in 1983 and began ringing handbells 10 years later when a family bell choir was started. Three non-musical friends asked her to teach them to ring bells in 1996 and the Morning Glory Ringers sprang to life. Three years later, when Hancock was unable to find a bell director, Cheryl was drafted by her fellow ringers to fill the position. Under her volunteer leadership, the program has grown to include seven choirs for ringers of all ages led by one professional and five volunteer directors.

Cheryl's "official" professional title is Ob/Gyn Nurse Practitioner and Childbirth Educator. She has found that her skills helping couples achieve their goals for labor and parenting within a supportive community where they can learn and grow is not that different from her work with the Hancock Handbell Ministry. Though the technical skills may be different, nurturing each participant to achieve their greatest potential using their particular talents and gifts is exactly the same.

Cheryl is available on Fridays from 10:45-11:45am in the Bell Room.
