Advent blog: "Annunciation" by Nancy Rottman

Advent blog: “Annunciation” by Nancy Rottman

This Sunday we will be reading about Mary’s visit with Elizabeth (The Visitation). But before we do that, it is important, I think, for us to pause for a good long moment to stand in Mary’s place and hear the angel announcing what could be, if she’d (we’d) only say, “yes!”  What annunciations have occurred in your life? Did you say, “Yes” or “No?” What might have been if you had chosen differently? Choice: integral to humanness.   I invite you to read (out loud if...
Advent Blog: The Gift

Advent Blog: The Gift

This is a song written by American songwriter Stephanie Davis.  It has been performed by Garth Brooks but the first version I heard was by Cape Breton Islander, Aselin Debison and her sweet voice lends the right tone to story.  This video was made by two young sisters who captured the innocence and beauty of the lyric.  It is a counter-cultural reminder about gifts and giving as we wait and watch for the coming of God’s gift of God’s very self.   Now Maria felt...
Advent Blog: Yesterday's Pain

Advent Blog: Yesterday’s Pain

YESTERDAY’S PAIN by Ann Weems   Some of us walk into Advent tethered to our unresolved yesterdays the pain still stabbing the hurt still throbbing. It’s not that we don’t know better; It’s just that we can’t stand up anymore by ourselves. On the way to Bethlehem. will you give us a hand?   Tethered to our unresolved yesterdays. What a lovely way to say we’re stuck in our past. I would dare to say that in some ways, big for some of us this...

Advent Devotional: God who surrounds us

Advent Devotional: God who surrounds us

December 16, 2014 by: Nancy Rottman Painting by Irv Davis     Psalm 125:2 As the mountains surround Jerusalem,     so the Lord surrounds his people, from this time on and forevermore. Throughout Advent we watch and wait for the light to break into the world again at Christmas.  We entreat the arrival of Emmanuel, God with us, in word and song.  We light candles of peace, hope, joy, and love and speak of the coming of God’s kingdom in which all will be made manifest.  Then there...
Advent Devotional: Waiting for Santa

Advent Devotional: Waiting for Santa

December 10, 2014 by: Nancy Rottman Psalm 27:13-14 I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord! Is it just me, or does the end of Psalm 27 sound like the adult version of waiting for Santa?  All the key words are there: wait, be strong, wait, believe, wait, goodness.  Is it just me, or did the waiting for Santa seem interminable when you...
