Building Update for Feb 12th

Building Update for Feb 12th

This week the construction crew at Hancock is installing rebar at the bottom of the elevator pit. This will strengthen the concrete floor of the elevator shaft. While preparing the pit, they had to re-rout some steam pipes that were in the way! In the kitchen, they are putting up drywall, and they are about a quarter finished! Soon, our building will undergo an electrical changeover, which will provide a new service with more power. Electricians are also working a new fire alarm system.
Senior Minister Sabbatical Leave

Senior Minister Sabbatical Leave

January 6, 2014   Dear Members and Friends of Hancock UCC, As we work together in my fifth year as your Senior Minister, the time has come for me to take a sabbatical leave.  Hancock provides regular sabbaticals for their clergy as one part of a strategy to keep our relationship healthy and vibrant.  I count it a privilege and a blessing to be given significant time for rest and renewal, as well as for preparing for the next tasks of ministry that lie ahead. ...
Another Road

Another Road

Hancock Church Sermon – Rev. Paul Shupe – January 5, 2014 – Matthew 2:1-12 http://youtu.be/oFYpKQvuDyc            “Another Road” And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.  So ends the great story of the visit of the wise men and their odd gifts for the child of gold, frankincense and myrrh.  It is a marvelous story with stars appearing and dreams revealing and schemes a-hatching, and only God knows what’s really going on. ...
Celebrating Advent-December 9th

Celebrating Advent-December 9th

Celebrating Advent December 9, 2013 “No, It Is Not ‘Better to Give than to Receive'” written by Reverend Paul Shupe If I had a nickel for everytime in my childhood that I was told “it’s better to give than to receive,” well, I’d have retired long ago.  The folks who said this to me – parents, grandparents, Sunday School teachers, ministers – were all well-intentioned.  They wanted me to share.  They wanted me to be generous, and not selfish.  They were also ill-logical, and therefore,...

Watch out for the Zombies

Hancock Church Sermon – Becca Lockwood – December 1, 2013 – Matthew 24:36-44 http://youtu.be/_3–3-NEjGE   “But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and they knew nothing until the flood...
Paying it Forward

Paying it Forward

Hancock Church Sermon – Rev. Dana Allen Walsh – November 24, 2013 – John 13:3-15 http://youtu.be/jkcdSHuBXic  “Paying It Forward” An interesting and noteworthy phenomenon has been sweeping across the United States: drive-through generosity. Fast-food workers are seeing kindness that they’ve never witnessed before. And it’s become more and more common. People are paying for their own meal and paying extra for the car behind them in the drive through. You can imagine what being the recipient of such generosity looks like: after placing your order,...

Blue Christmas – Dec 9, 7:30pm

[O God] Do not stay far off when I am in trouble with no one to help me… I have no more strength than a few drops of water.  All my bones are out of joint, my heart is like melted wax.  My strength has dried up like a broken clay pot. -Psalm 22:11, 14-15   This year’s Blue Christmas service at Hancock will be held December 9th, 7pm in the Katie Stuart room.  All are welcome to attend.   Tags: blue Christmas, Christmas, Hancock Church, Hancock United Church...

What's Wrong with Being Right?

What’s Wrong with Being Right?

Hancock Church Sermon – Rev. Dana Allen Walsh – October 27, 2013 – Luke 18:9-14 http://youtu.be/XEaK4ELK2Os “What’s Wrong With Being Right?” So this guy buys himself a parrot. The pet store owner warned him that this parrot was obnoxious, and sure enough, as soon as they got home, the parrot started talking and wouldn’t be quiet. And the words he used are ones I can’t use here in church. The parrot cursed and screached and yelled obscenities. The owner tried to teach him new words,...
Forgiven and Forgiving

Forgiven and Forgiving

Hancock Church Sermon – Rev. Paul Shupe – October 6, 2013 – Luke 17:1-6 http://youtu.be/0C0I-T7Rbn8 “Forgiven and Forgiving”        During the month of October here at Hancock United Church of Christ, the theme of our worship life together will be “community” which is an over-used, often abused word that can be used to describe many things or that sometimes seems to describe nothing at all.  But here, community means some definite things, and our understanding of all these things begins here, at the table that...
