Hancock United Church of Christ

Field Education Program:

Hancock Church is a Boston Theological Institute site operating in partnership with both Andover Newton Theological School and the Harvard Divinity School.

"Hancock can be a valuable and exciting experience for seminarians"

Seminarian Opportunities: Ministerial competencies are offered in Preaching and/or Worship, Pastoral Care and Counseling, Religious Education, Administrative and Program Development, TV Ministry, Public Policy and Planning, and Denominational Polity.

Opportunities are offered to participate in diverse areas of the congregation's life; children's and youth programs, adult education, music, preaching, leading worship, television ministry, pastoral care and social action.

Hancock encourages seminarians to share their individual ideas and talents and has come to count on them to promote and participate in new initiatives and programs.

The Program: Hancock can be a valuable and exciting experience for seminarians. A lot is expected from seminarians, but a lot of help is given too. Seminarians quickly become absorbed into the Hancock Family.

Seminarians have traditionally been involved in weekend retreats and in the Annual Spring Work Trip for our youth. Attendance at weekly staff meetings exposes them to the coordinating and administrative challenges that must be addressed in any thriving, caring church.

Seminarians are encouraged to spend at least two years with us. Several have opted for three.  Generally, at least two seminarians participate at any given time, providing additional opportunities for collegial experience. We also provide generous tuition stipends and compensation for travel in accordance with seminary guidelines.

An Experienced Teaching Parish: Hancock has more than 25 years experience in training seminarystudents for a variety of pastoral ministries in the modern church. The church's three ordained ministers all contribute to the mentoring of seminarians and have a strong personal interest in helping seminarians understand and articulate the meaning of Trinitarian Christian witness and discipleship. The lay members of the Teaching Parish Committee work closely with students and ministers to provide continuing guidance and encouragement.

If You Are Interested: At Hancock we welcome the seminarians' presence, appreciate their individual gifts for ministry, celebrate their growth and depend on them as partners. We welcome your interest in our congregation. If you would like to explore this opportunity further, please contact your Field Education Office or Hancock's Teaching Parish Committee. We would be happy to introduce you to the site in person and answer any questions you have.
