Rev. Callaghan is a native of North Carolina, where she served as a campus minister before becoming a licensed couples and family therapist for more than ten years. She is a graduate of Union Theological Seminary in New York City, and comes to Hancock from the ministry team of Union Congregational Church in Montclair, New Jersey.

“I am honored to join the wonderful staff of Hancock Church, and to stand in the long line of prophetic and powerful leaders that have shaped both this church and the larger community of Lexington. I am eager to expand the ways in which we work together for the greater good with unity, joy and purpose,” said the Rev. Callaghan.

Her duties at Hancock include leading the evening worship service “Worship @ the Well” held at 6:15 on Sunday evenings. She also supports ministries to children and youth and their families, and is active in all aspects of congregational life. “Barbara has wonderful gifts for leadership and preaching,” said the Rev. Paul Shupe, Hancock’s Senior Minister. “Just as important, she has a warm and inviting personality, and she listens with genuine interest and compassion. She is an advocate for equality, justice, and peace. We’re thrilled to have her join our team.”

The Rev. Callaghan is married to Kate Callaghan, and is expecting their first child in February.

The Installation marks the official beginning of her tenure at Hancock. The Rev. Julie Peeples of Congregational United Church of Christ in Greensboro, NC will preach the sermon, and clergy from nearby United Church of Christ congregations, as well as the Lexington Interfaith Clergy Association will participate.
