The Book Cart

SEPTEMBER NOTES FROM POTTER LIBRARY

This month we are featuring a few of the new books on display and on the cart in our library.

Readers of Annie Dillard will welcome Teaching a Stone to Talk, one of her earlier books. Annie writes about nature and natural occurrences such as an eclipse with her special talent to see the beauty and mystery of it.

Jane Kenyon's A Hundred White Daffodils is a collection of essays, poems and translations published posthumously by her husband Donald Hall. Peg McKinnon reviewed this book in May for the Friday Fellowship and we recommend it to you.

Climbing Mountain Paths by L. M. Bicknell is a heartwarming novel about the struggles of the people of West Virginia. This book was given to us by Peggy and Bob Bicknell.

Martin Marty and his son Micah Marty collaborated to present Places Along the Way: Meditations on the Journey of Faith. Micah's sensitive and beautiful photographs accompany Martin Marty's meditations. We will feature this book for Lent.

For the younger set, Bagels from Benny by Aubrey Davis is a story about faith and generosity and the book is beautifully illustrated by Dusan Petricic.

Welcome to the Potter Library

Our self-service library, located on the main corridor of the Hancock Church Education Wing, is open on Sunday mornings and weekdays during church office hours. Our mission is to be of service to all in the Hancock family on their journey of faith.

The library shelves hold reference and Biblical materials, inspirational reading and volumes that offer support and help for daily living. Most of one wall of our room is dedicated to the children - with a large collection of wonderful picture books and books for early readers.

Look for the blue signs that indicate main topics and check the posted Dewey Decimal listing to narrow your search. The card catalog lists books by title, author and subject. Potter Library has a computer available to all - you may access the web or set up an e-mail address.

Checkout directions are posted on the desk. Just sign the card in the back of the book, including your telephone number and the date due - three weeks hence. Then leave the signed book card in the left side of the checkout box on the desk -- Happy reading!

The Potter Library Committee supports the activities and programs of the Church and hopes to enrich the lives of the members of Hancock. Your ideas and book requests are welcome - we have a suggestion box on the desk.
