Psalm 125:2

As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the Lord surrounds his people,
from this time on and forevermore.

Throughout Advent we watch and wait for the light to break into the world again at Christmas.  We entreat the arrival of Emmanuel, God with us, in word and song.  We light candles of peace, hope, joy, and love and speak of the coming of God’s kingdom in which all will be made manifest.  Then there is this treasure from Psalm 125.  Picture how safe, loved, protected we are with a God who surrounds us like mountains; whose love stands before us, behind us, and beside us! Today, tomorrow, forever!  Then imagine a world in which everyone right here, right now feels that safe, that protected, that loved.  If we understand God’s commandment to love one another as God loves us; if we understand that God was humbly born into this world to remind us of that; then who do we need to surround with love this day? Who do we need to call into the center of God’s love, into the sheltering and protecting love of God given through us?

Holy One, we know that your love stands tall like mountains and lays low in the valleys of this world.  Make us like you! In the name of the One born for love’s sake, Amen
