“Fear is the cheapest room in the house. I would like to see you living in better conditions.”

God chose to have God’s child be born into a specific time and place that was characterized by fear and oppression. What is fiercer than this kind of love? To give the gift right in the midst of the reign of Roman terror; to give one’s child to the soon-to-be refugee couple, Joseph and Mary? Today it would be like Jesus being born in the midst of an ISIS occupied land, or the messiah taking the form of a Nigerian baby girl in a village that is constantly threatened by Boko Haram.

Fear is a natural part of life, but to be ruled by fear, to have fear be the motivator of our most important decisions, is not the natural state of the spirit we have been given. We have within us the ability to choose to live, fully and boldly, in the midst of whatever might be going on around us. This is not to say we put our heads in the sand and ignore anything we find unpleasant or scary, but that we see clearly what is happening and chose fierce love anyway. This Advent let us wait with an intention of being given an even bolder and fiercer love than we have had within us before. Come Lord Jesus come, and replace the fear in our hearts with perfect love. Amen.
